Some states carry inheritance taxes which are taxes imposed on people or organizations who inherit property from a deceased person's estate (or imposed on the estate itself).

The taxes are usually based on the value of the inherited property and are often collected from the executor or administrator of the estate. In heritance tax is not to be confused with estate or property taxes which are solely the imposed on the estate.
