McCowans’ founding partner Ranald McCowan commenced the firm as a sole practitioner in 1983 at the Runaway Bay Marina. The firm’s principal areas of practice were originally property and commercial matters.

In 1993 the firm commenced practicing in the areas of estate law, family and relationship law and personal injuries law.

In 1996 Gerard Murphy, head of the firm’s personal injuries section at the time, was appointed as a Partner of McCowans.

In 1997 the firm grew too large for the premises at Runaway Bay and moved to the Seabank Centre in Southport.

In 1999, Suzanne Harrison commenced working for McCowans and from then has been head of the firm’s family and relationship law section.

In 2007, Toni Palmer was appointed as a Partner. She commenced with the firm as a solicitor in 2004 and was appointed Associate in 2006 before her promotion to Partner. Toni, together with Gerard Murphy, acts as head of our personal injuries section.

In late 2007 the firm moved again from Southport to its current premises at Level 6, 33 Elkhorn Avenue, Surfers Paradise.

In 2008, Kent Dalziel was appointed as an Associate to the firm and head of The Estate Lawyers.

McCowans has steadily grown over the past 25 years from a sole practitioner firm to become one of the largest stand alone firms on the Gold Coast with three Partners, three Associates, a total of eight employed lawyers and over 25 staff.
