When an outside party to those named to the trust challenges the validity and purpose of a trust, they are “contesting” the trust. Similar to the process of contesting a will, questions of the validity and legal of the trust are presented.

Also, a trust can be contested on the grounds that the decisions made by the creator of the trust were influenced by gifts or cash rewards.
